New York Marathon
The New York Marathon takes place annually on the first Sunday of November in New York City. Each year 50,000 runners participate and the marathon attracts more than two million spectators. It is considered to be one of the biggest sporting events in the city. There are more than 10,000 international runners. People can only participate if they have gained entry via a marathon lottery or are running for a charity sponsor. The deadline to apply for the marathon is the 17th of February in 2017. If you have tried to enter the marathon three times, but have been unsuccessful, you are automatically given entry on your fourth time.
For New Yorkers, gaining a spot in the Marathon is a lot more challenging. New York residents must first run in nine(!) qualifying races over the prior year in order to qualify for the opportunity to participate in the New York marathon. Those that do not, can try their luck with the marathon lottery system.
