PATH between New Jersey and Manhattan

PATH in New York

The PATH rail system runs from New Jersey to the heart of Manhattan. When travelling from New Jersey to Manhattan or back you can take the PATH for an efficient and comfortable ride. There are two PATH routes, with several stops in New York and New Jersey. It’s a good means of transport when you need to travel from Manhattan to Hoboken, Downtown Jersey City or Newark Train station.

Travelling from New Jersey to New York

PATH is the rail system that connects New Jersey to Manhattan. There are two lines: one running from the One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan to Newark and Hoboken in New Jersey, the other running from 33rd Street in New York to Hoboken and Journal Square in New Jersey. Travelling from New Jersey to New York needn’t take too much time. A train ride will take anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes:

Newark Penn Station – WTC25 minutes
Hoboken – WTC10 minutes
Hoboken – 33rd St14 minutes
Journal Square (via Hoboken) – 33rd St27 minutes

Eric’s Tip: If you are staying in New Jersey and planning to use the Hop on Hop off bus, choose the Hop on Hop off bus with shuttle to and from hotels in New Jersey. You book the Hop on Hop off bus for either one, or two days and will be collected in the morning, from your hotel and transferred to Manhattan. At the end of the day you will be transferred back to your New Jersey hotel (click on the link for a list of participating hotels).

Tickets for PATH

A single ride costs $2.75. If you have a MetroCard (the same card that you use for the subway in Manhattan) with credit, you can use the PATH system. If you don’t have a MetroCard, you can purchase a MetroCard at any PATH or New York City Transit vending machine. There are multiple card options, like a 7-day unlimited card and a 10-ride card: both cards can save you money if you intend to use the PATH often during your stay. Children under 5 years of age travel for free.

Note: PATH does not accept the Unlimited MetroCard.

Buy your PATH card in advance

If you prefer a Pay-Per-Ride PATH card, you can buy one before you leave. This card is valid for 10 rides and costs £30. You can use this card several times consecutively (max 4x). For example, if you are with two people then you could use this card two times and you would then use two rides. You can also refill this card at any station if your balance is low.

Changing from PATH to subway

The PATH card you receive can also be used for the New York subway. If you use the PATH first and then change to the subway, this will be calculated as two separate rides. So you’ll have to check out from the PATH and check in again at the subway. The same goes for first using the subway and then changing to the PATH.
